Thailand – Process

Overview

Thailand means "Land of the Free" and the Thai people are very proud of their cultural heritage. Thai are warm, friendly, and generous. They are extremely loyal to family and show great respect for elders. Over the years we have developed a highly respected and cooperative working relationship with the Department of Social Development and Welfare in Thailand for the adoptive placement of children. Our staff travels biannually to Thailand to identify available children. A DVD of waiting children is available.

Available Children

After our recent visit to Thailand we have many new children available for adoption. Special needs children, many with minor, correctable conditions, ages eighteen months to twelve years are available, especially boys. We are especially looking for families for healthy older boys, ages 5 to 7. At this time the Department of Public Welfare is not accepting new applications for healthy babies.

Parent Eligibility

Married couples with or without children may apply, although small families are preferred. Both parents must be at least twenty-five years old with a total of no more than two divorces between them. Well-qualified, single women are accepted and have been successful in their endeavors to adopt minor special needs children from Thailand.

Hague Convention

AAI was granted Hague accreditation on February 29, 2008.

Parents are required to complete 10 hours of training. This will include at least one of the two courses recommended by AAI, these courses are presented in DVD format and there is either a multiple choice test or discussion questions that must be completed. The DVD will be sent after AAI receives a family's application.

Referral Information

Thailand provides background information as well as health and developmental information on the children. All children are tested for HIV and Hepatitis B.

Travel

Both parents are required to travel to complete the adoption process. Parents must be prepared to stay approximately ten days.
